When designing a Web site it is important to consider how the users will see the Web page. There are many browsers available that a user could be using to view your Web site. Consideration of the standards between each browser is important. There are so many browsers available on the market that the Web page that has been created could, and, most probably will look different on every browser. Some browsers handle certain scripting languages better than others e.g. Mozilla Firefox has no problems handling animated gifts as rollovers on buttons, whereas Internet Explorer 5 cannot handle them and will not display them correctly or may not display them at all. In section 2 of this report will discuss the standards between browsers, browsers available and how the browsers handle the HTML language in different ways. This section will also show the usage between the most popular browsers and will display the statistics as a pie chart with each chunk representing a different browser. In section 3 of this report, will discuss the security risks from both the client side and server side and will list the top ten vulnerabilities that a Web site must overcome to stay protected. This section will also display the statistics of security risks in a bar chart. Section 4 discusses how the information that is in this report will be used in the main project.

Section 5 is the conclusion of all the information that has been gathered to make this report and how it can be used to create a better compatible and secure Web site.

Browsers
As the internet was created to unite the world into one inter connecting community, the use of so many different browsers that view Web pages in different ways makes it harder for a Web designer to create a Web site and it can stop users seeing a Web page in the same way. When designing a Web site, the designer must test their pages in different browsers to check the outcome of that page. With so many browsers available, it is important to consider which browsers to test for and how many past browser versions need to be catered for within the designs.

As technology has advanced, the situation has improved to that of a few years ago but the problem has not been completely resolved. You can now be confident that at least 99% of users have browsers that support nearly all of HTML 4. However, there are still inconsistencies in the way Cascading Style Sheets are implemented and older browser versions pre-dating the current standards take a long time to fade away entirely. A Web site designer must now also consider the mobile user; phones, PDAs and other handheld media devices that have access to the internet. The browser that these devices use will be a variant of a standard browser but the user will view the pages on a much smaller screen. A mobile browser, also called a micro browser, mini browser or wireless internet browser (WIB) are optimised so as to display Web content most effectively for small screens on portable devices. Mobile browser software must also be small and efficient to accommodate the low memory capacity and low-bandwidth of wireless handheld devices. 1. My computer only can run one web browser

In probably 99% of cases this is completely wrong. Your computer can handle multiple web browsers, and while I don't necessarily recommend downloading and installing every one, experimenting with one or two can offer different views of the web and features you may find useful. As when installing other software, however, backup all important data on your machine first in case problems do occur.

2. It is too hard to learn another web browser

Virtually every web browser has a back and forward button, address bar, and search bar. You may have to take a few minutes to learn other features, such as bookmarks / Favorites, navigating the History, and even longer if you want to configure your browsing experience, but learning how to use a new browser should not take long at all. Some browsers, such as Mozilla Firefox, even come with a help feature for Internet Explorer users.

3. I'll lose all my bookmarks / Favorites

Most web browsers support importing bookmarks or Favorites from others quite easily. And while new bookmarks or Favorites in one web browser may not transfer immediately to another, you may wish to look at online bookmark management services such as Furl and Google Bookmarks. This way you can access your bookmarks with any browser, even one on a different machine!

4. Most sites won't display correctly

While some websites such as Windows/Microsoft Update and online banking sites may not work correctly on non-Internet Explorer browsers, a greater number of websites are being written with technologies that work well across all browsers. This is happening as an increased number of Internet users try different browsers.

5. Internet Explorer is safer than people say

While great strides have been made to increase Internet Explorer's security in recent versions, check a website like Secunia and compare the number of advisories regarding Internet Explorer versus other browsers. Especially note the unpatched exploits and their severities - you may be surprised.

6. Spyware and viruses aren't a problem - I use (insert Internet Service Provider here)

While many ISPs offer antivirus and anti-spyware/malware applications for their users, these will not protect you from all problems. These programs will not patch browser bugs, but they may detect certain malware trying to exploit them. Also, remember that security should take a multipronged approach since no software can detect every piece of malware. By using a potentially more-secure web browser along with security software, you reduce the chances of malware infection that much more.

7. I'm safe - I have an antivirus program, a firewall, and anti-spyware software

See the above. Nothing offers 100% protection, and some browser bugs are exploitable even if you set browser security settings to their maximum! However, if you have all of the above software programs installed, your chances of malware infection have definitely lessened - good work!

While many people find their Internet browsing experience with the default browser adequate, consider using another browser. A different web browser can offer variety and advanced features, and learning how to use one should not be too difficult. Many support importing bookmarks / Favorites and other settings. Plus, using a different browser, no matter how much security software you have installed, may help decrease the chances of getting a malware infection. "Variety's the very spice of life", the quote from English poet William Cowper says, and if you can add a little bit of that while increasing your computer's security, why not give it a shot?

Browsers are the key to our travels around the Internet. They take us to all of the interesting destinations online, and help us to find information that is useful to us. Unfortunately, as we browse around the Internet we are not always as protected as we'd like to be.

3 Unique Alternative Web Browsers for Your iOS Device

A few weeks ago I wrote about Atomic Web as the best web browser for iOS devices, and while I believe it is a superior option, Atomic Web is not the only alternative web browser you can use on your iOS device. There are three more—Dual Browser, iCabMobile, and iSwifter—that are all great options because of their unique features. Let’s check them out.
1. Dual Browser

The aptly named Dual Bowser ($1.99) allows you to view two different web pages side-by-side. Say you’re browsing WonderHowTo on your iPad and you want to open a link without navigating away from your current page. Well, of course you could open the link in a new tab, but with Dual Browser you can open the link in the other browsing window!

There are several dual browsers in the iTunes App Store, but Dual Bowser is the only one I know of that provides the option for opening links in the other window. All you have to do is press down and hold on a link, and a contextual menu will appear in which you can choose to open the link in the other browser.

Dual Browser has traditional web browser features for saving and managing bookmarks, downloading images, and setting a web page or site as your home page. Overall, the app works, but sometimes it crashes and it doesn’t include password protection like other alternative web browsers for iOS devices. Nevertheless, it’s an app that remains on the home page of my iPad.
2. iCabMobile

I just discovered iCabMobile ($1.99), and I would say that it runs almost neck to neck with Atomic Web for its abundance of features. You will spend at least an hour customizing all the features that iCabMobile has to offer.

iCabMobile includes password protection, hand gesture navigation (all customizable), automatic tabs, full screen mode, guest mode, Dropbox support, QuickStarter feature, AirPrint support (iOS 4.2 required), simple built-in RSS reader, and so much more.

Like Atomic Web, the hand gesture navigation means that you can, for example, go back and forth between opened tabs and pages with the tap or swipe of your fingers. The internet is designed to be open to all who have access to a computer and an internet connection. In the early days of the World Wide Web, the information was sent over the set infrastructure of telephone lines using telephone fax/modems which sent digital file information at a set rate over the lines. Unauthorized users, usually verified by a password will not be able to decrypt the information or view or interact with the website. Password verification is accomplished through use of a Secure Socket Layer, which sets the level of encryption on a particular website.

Facebook Friends RockMelt Social Web Browser

RockMelt launches beta 3 of its Web browser with key integration and support from Facebook, one of the social networks it's built around. Facebook June 14 finally gave the RockMelt social Web browser the time of day, some seven months after it launched to provide users an easy on ramp to the largest social network's services.

RockMelt launched last November backed by Web browser pioneer Marc Andreessen. RockMelt frames the browsing experience with people's contacts from Facebook, tweet streams from Twitter and other Web content to keep users from having to switch back and forth between those applications.

Facebook contacts appear along the left edge of the browser window after users log into RockMelt via their Facebook e-mail and password. The right side of RockMelt includes buttons for accessing the Facebook News Feed, Facebook Profile, Twitter tweet stream and timeline.

RockMelt beta 3 lets users manage Facebook friend requests, messages and notifications directly in the browser instead of solely on Facebook.com. These tools, located in the top left corner of the browser just as they are on Facebook, should be a key convenience point for the browser's hundreds of thousands of users.

Users may also now confirm friend requests and compose and reply to Facebook messages directly within RockMelt, and users will see notifications when friends post on their Wall or comment on their posts. Also, when users start a chat on Facebook.com, it will open a RockMelt chat window. This could be a big deal for this popular RockMelt feature, which 40 percent of the browser's users use each day.

"RockMelt's deep integration with Facebook makes it easier for people to take their friends with them around the Web, creating more personal and meaningful experiences wherever they go," said Ethan Beard, director of platform partnerships for Facebook. Other features include and expandable "friend edge" on the left that will display users' full ist of friends with their names and pictures. Users may also swap their friend edge and the "app edge" on the right. Users may also now user their computer mouse to scroll through friends in the friend edge.

RockMelt lists the full set of changes for beta 3 in this blog post. Internet-able smartphones have been out on the market for long enough, and offered by enough major device makers, that now might be a good time to assess the state of the web browser in the never-ending smartphone contest. Especially since now is when a whole bunch of exciting announcements have come out by makers of that very software we count on to get online - web browsers.

Any article that claims to summarize the current state of smartphone web browsers must start with Opera Mini, as it is far and away the best web browser the mobile device market has yet produced. The number one browser worldwide, interestingly enough, has yet to be mentioned in this piece - that being Nokia's. (And to think, all this time we though they were just the best smartphones for making actual phone calls.)

The big improvement that all smartphone web browsers have either implemented or will be wise to any day now is the integration of the desktop interface with the mobile content delivery format. Now users browsing the web on their handhelds can view a full-screen window of the entire web page (minus scroll-downs of course) just like they would on their desktop or laptop. Then to read a specific portion of the page, they just move a sort of magnifying glass over the section with their cursor and zoom in.

In the past, users could only view web pages reformatted in a messy, clunky single column resembling nothing like the web pages they're familiar with. This made navigation next to impossible, even if one was already familiar with the layout of the web page (as it would appear on a full-sized computer). Thank goodness for progress.

The most recent release (IE7) fixes some issues that previous releases had, but for some reason, Microsoft still refuses to support what other browsers have been supporting for years.

Using IE puts a strain on web developers, and they often have to create and use "hacks" and work-arounds just for IE. This is simply unacceptable. It creates non standards-compliant websites, and often forces webmasters to leave out features they would otherwise include. Many web developers also live by the "Screw IE" philosophy, which means that web pages will look silly to you only because you use IE. The same page will look great if you're using another browser. Is it really worth it?

Many people are afraid to switch because they don't like change, and they're afraid to learn a new piece of software. Modern browsers have a very small learning curve, and only take a few minutes to get the hang of. In fact, switching to IE7 will be more difficult to learn than changing to Firefox. What are you waiting for?

Want another reason? Security. IE has many security flaws the other browsers have fixed. IE is a target for hackers. Do you like viruses, spyware and adware? Then keep using IE. Using a different browser instantly makes your browsing significantly safer.

A person who uses Internet has surely used a web browser which is the computer software that retrieves, represents, and traverses digital information resources found on the worldwide web. Microsoft has included an enhanced version of ReadyBoost on Windows 7, a new feature that speeds up your computer even in a low memory situation by using flash memory, in its latest operating system Windows 7, scheduled to be launched on October 22.

ReadyBoost, which also comes with Vista, make use of a USB flash drive or card as memory and it works with most of the flash storage devices.

In Windows 7, it can handle more flash memory and even multiple devices up to eight, for a maximum 256GB of additional memory. When you plug a ReadyBoost-compatible storage device into your system, the AutoPlay dialog box offers you the option to speed up your computer using ReadyBoost. If you select this option, you can choose how much memory on the device to use for this purpose.

When you set up a device to work with ReadyBoost, Windows shows you the space recommended for an optimal performance. For ReadyBoost to effectively speed up your computer, the flash drive or memory card should have at least 1GB of available space. Google released a new version of its Chrome Web browser, as the search giant continues its efforts to get a foothold in a market dominated by Microsoft Corp.

The new Chrome Web Browser represents the first major update of the software aimed at the general public since Google entered the browser business six months ago.

According to a post on Google's blog, the new Chrome beta loads certain types of Web pages 25 per cent to 35 per cent faster than the current version of the browser.

It offers Web surfers faster performance and a handful of new features, such as auto-filling of personal information on online forms and a new way for users to drag around tabs of different Web pages within the browser window.

Google was a distant No.4 in the browser market, with 1.2 per cent share of the worldwide market in February, according to market research firm Net Applications.

Microsoft's Internet Explorer dominates the market, with a 67.4 per cent market share in February, while the Mozilla foundation's Firefox browser had a roughly 22 per cent share. Apple's Safari browser had an 8 per cent share.

Last month, Google officially joined the European Union's antitrust case against Microsoft, describing the browser market as "largely uncompetitive." The EU has charged Microsoft with abusing its dominant market position by bundling its Internet Explorer Web browser with its Windows personal computer operating system.

The new features were previously available to programmers using the "developer" version of Chrome, but Google has now packaged all the updates together into a more reliable beta test version that is available for download.

Google also has a more polished, so-called stable version of Chrome, based on the older beta version.

No longer is a beta, Google’s Chrome Web browser a capable contender to Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.

However, the search company's browser not have some basic features found in IE, Firefox and Opera, and limits users who want to characterize settings and customize their browser. In spite of its shortcomings, browser users should give Google Chrome a try.

Just a few short months ago, Google surprised the Web world with the make public of the beta of Google Chrome, a new Web browser direct from the search massive itself.
So what does the launch of Google Chrome 1.0 mean for the Web browsing world and the Web in general? Well, the simple fact that it is from Google has a major impact, and should put the browser in a good place to fight with Microsoft and Mozilla for market share.

But what about the browser itself? Microsoft preps to push IE 8; makes blocking tool available

As it has done with previous Internet Explorer (IE) releases, Microsoft has made available an IE 8 blocking toolkit to allow users to keep Microsoft’s browser from being downloaded automatically on their Windows machines.

In a January 6 posting to the Microsoft IE blog, company officials noted that Microsoft is planning to push the final IE 8 release via its Automatic Update (AU), Windows Update (WU) and Microsoft Update (MU) update systems. To keep the release from being pushed, customers can download the blocker toolkit from the Microsoft Download Center.

Unlike some previous versions of the toolkit, there is no expiration date on the latest blocker. The toolkit can be configured by running the registry file on client machines or via Group Policy, according to the IE 8 blog posting.

Once the final IE 8 bits are ready, Microsoft is planning to mark them as a top priority for distribution, officials said via the blog entry:
“The IE8 update will be released as the highest priority update for each operating system. For Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, it will be listed as Important. For Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, the update will be listed as High Priority. Delivery of IE8 via AU will begin after we make IE8 available from the Microsoft Download Center. Of course, users can always decline to install IE8 through AU when it is offered.”

Microsoft hasn’t provided a final release target date for IE 8, other than to say some time in 2009. Late last year, company officials acknowledged Microsoft would not be releasing the final version of IE 8 before the end of calendar 2008, as some company officials had claimed previously. Instead, Microsoft is planning to distribute in the first quarter of 2009 one more public test release, Release Candidate 1, before it rolls out the final IE 8.

I’m not sure if we’ll see RC 1 of IE 8 this week. While Microsoft is expected to release the official version of Windows 7 Beta 1 to private and public testers over course of the next three days, the build of IE8 that is part of Windows 7 Beta 1 is still Beta 2, company officials said on January 7. (The refreshed partner test build of IE 8 that Microsoft released privately in December was designated as “RC1″ but isn’t the official RC1 release, the Softies have said.)
When I asked earlier this week, Microsoft officials wouldn’t comment on when IE 8 RC1 would go live.

Netscape Navigator 9 is the most recent and final release of the Netscape series of browsers produced by the Netscape Communications division of parent AOL, first announced on January 23, 2007. Netscape Navigator is also known as Netscape.It is a proprietary web browser that was popular during the 1990s. Once the flagship product of Netscape Communications Corporation and the dominant browser in usage share, its user base had almost completely evaporated by 2002, partly due to the inclusion of Microsoft's Internet Explorer web browser with the Windows operating system, but also due to lack of significant innovation after the late 1990s. Netscape's demise was a central component of Microsoft's antitrust trial, where the court ruled that (among other things) bundling Internet Explorer with Windows was an illegal monopolistic business practice.

The Navigator browser was succeeded by the Netscape Communicator internet suite, followed by later releases Netscape 6, Netscape 7 and Netscape Browser 8.

However it was confirmed on 1 May 2007 the Netscape Navigator name would once again be re-generated in the next release of Netscape's browser, Netscape Navigator 9.

AOL officially stopped development of Netscape Navigator on 28 December 2007 and originally planned to continue support for the browser in the form of security updates until 1 February 2008. This date was later extended to 1 March 2008. AOL canceled support on that date, but will allow users to download archived versions of the browser. AOL also continues to maintain the Netscape website as an Internet portal.

In 1998, an informal group called the Mozilla Organization was formed and largely funded by Netscape (the vast majority of programmers working on the code were paid by Netscape) to co-ordinate the development of Netscape 5 (codenamed "Gromit"), which would be based on the Communicator source code. However, the aging Communicator code proved difficult to work with and the decision was taken to scrap Netscape 5 and re-write the source code. The re-written source code was in the form of the Mozilla web browser, which, with a few additions, Netscape 6 was based on.

This decision meant that Netscape's next major version was severely delayed. In the meantime, Netscape was taken over by AOL who, acting under pressure from the Web Standards Project, forced its new division to release Netscape 6.0 in 2000. The suite again consisted of Netscape Navigator and the other Communicator components, with the addition of a built-in AOL Instant Messenger client, Netscape Instant Messenger. However, it was clear that Netscape 6 was not yet ready for release and it flopped badly. It was based on Mozilla 0.6, which was not ready to be used by the general public yet due to many serious bugs that would cause it to crash often or render web pages slowly.

Later versions of Netscape 6 were much improved (especially 6.2.x was regarded as a good release), but the browser still struggled to make an impact on a disappointed community.

Netscape is the general name for a series of web browsers originally produced by Netscape Communications Corporation, now a subsidiary of AOL. The original browser was once the dominant browser in terms of usage share, but as a result of the first browser war it lost virtually all of its share to Internet Explorer.

AOL announced that it discontinued Netscape and would cease support on February 1, 2008, however this was pushed back to March 1, 2008. So on March 1, 2008 AOL ended all support for all Netscape browsers and client products.

Netscape Navigator (versions 1.0–4.08)

Netscape Navigator was the name of Netscape's web browser from versions 1.0 through 4.8. The first beta release versions of the browser were released in 1994 and known as Mosaic and then Mosaic Netscape until a legal challenge from the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (makers of NCSA Mosaic), which many of Netscape's founders used to develop, led to the name change to Netscape Navigator. The company's name also changed from Mosaic Communications Corporation to Netscape Communications Corporation.

The browser was easily the most advanced available and was therefore an instant success, becoming market leader while still in beta. NeoPlanet was a graphical web browser based on the Trident rendering engine (a technology developed by Microsoft for use in Internet Explorer). Started in 1998, NeoPlanet was designed as a customisable browser with content channels and search facilities. As well as this, it also included email and download management. When first launched, it was offered by Lycos as well as featuring a Lycos skin.

Recently, the NeoPlanet browser has no longer been available officially and Lycos is no longer distributing the browser either. On the homepage, NeoPlanet Inc. did mention that "The NeoPlanet browser is currently not available for download. Please check back in the future for more information." although it was still obtainable by going to the Download page as of early 2008.

Minimo (from "Mini Mozilla") was a project to create a version of the Mozilla web browser for small devices like PDAs and mobile phones. The project also aims to make it easier for developers to embed parts of Mozilla into systems with limited system resources (for example, machines with low amounts of RAM).

To minimize the use of system resources, Minimo may not include a lot of Mozilla's functionality, such as support for FTP or SVG. In addition, the browser uses small screen rendering technology to reformat Web pages for pocket-sized displays. The user interface is also designed to take up as little screen space as possible. Because Minimo is based on Gecko infra-structure, developers can decide to build specific versions and evaluate other features such as the canvas, SVG support, and more.

To date, most Minimo development has centered around ARM devices (such as Hewlett-Packard's iPAQ) with around 64MB of RAM, running Familiar Linux and the GPE Palmtop Environment (where it is now the default browser). Minimo 0.1 was released for this platform in 2004. Version 0.2 came out in March of 2007 and represents a product targeted for developers.

A Windows CE version of Minimo is also under development, built against the Pocket PC 2003 software development kit. The first public build of Minimo for Windows CE was made available in February 2005.

Chris Hofmann created the Minimo project during his employment at Netscape Communications. He single handedly saved this project from being canceled many times. The loyal dog, Sparky, is the project's Chief Mascot. Currently Chris works for the Mozilla Corporation. Chris is also responsible for some of the Minimo key features such as the Homebase bar, a format for displaying bookmarks more amenable to mobile devices.

The lead Minimo developer is Doug Turner, who has headed this and additional Mozilla mobile projects such as the Mozilla labs project named Joey. The Mozilla Foundation hired Turner in December 2004 to work full time on Mobile projects. Minimo has been funded by Nokia and others. Nokia's involvement became public in mid-2004.

Maxthon (formerly known as MyIE2) is a China-based freeware (more specifically donateware) web browser for Windows. From its early MyIE2 roots, Maxthon has developed a growing user base, especially in China, and in 2006 it received commercial backing for Maxthon 2.0. It uses the Trident layout engine, just like Microsoft's Internet Explorer, but it can use the Gecko engine used in Mozilla Firefox as well.

Madfox was a web browser based on Mozilla Firefox, developed by a Chinese developer Robin Lu (nicknamed as "splyb"). The project was an experimental project trying to enhance non-standard compatibility with Internet Explorer. As of October 12, 2005 the project stopped, and due to the rate of security fixes in browsers, this project can be considered retired. Some of the documented changes:

Enhanced getElementByName and getElementById functions.
Support of JScript.Encode.
HTML MIME type sniffing.
getFrameByName and getFrameById functions.
Improved content-disposition tolerance.

According to Microsoft, security, ease of use, and improvements in RSS, CSS, and Ajax support are its priorities for IE8, along with significantly better support of web standards than its predecessor. When a special meta element or its corresponding HTTP header is included in a web page, IE8 will render that page like IE7 would (strict mode). Overview

Version 7.0 of Internet Explorer has been renamed Windows Internet Explorer (as opposed to Microsoft Internet Explorer) as part of Microsoft's rebranding of components that are included with Windows. It is available as part of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, and as a separate download via Windows Update for Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2) and Windows Server 2003 with SP1 or SP2. Internet Explorer 7 can also be downloaded directly from Microsoft's website. Large portions of the underlying architecture, including the rendering engine and security framework, have been significantly reworked. Partly as a result of security enhancements, the browser is a stand-alone application, rather than integrated with the Windows shell, and is thus no longer capable of acting as a file browser. The first security advisory was posted only one day after the day of release, but it turned out to be a security problem in Outlook Express, not in Internet Explorer 7. The first vulnerability exclusive to Internet Explorer 7 was posted after 6 days. On Windows Vista, Internet Explorer operates in a special "Protected Mode", that runs the browser in a security sandbox that has no access to the rest of the operating system or file system, except the Temporary Internet Files folder. When running in Protected Mode, IE7 is a low integrity process; it cannot gain write access to files and registry keys outside of a user profile's folder. This feature aims to mitigate problems whereby newly-discovered flaws in the browser (or in Add-Ons hosted inside it) allowed hackers to subversively install software on the user's computer (typically spyware).

The Windows Vista and XP version of Windows Internet Explorer 7 additionally feature an update to the WinInet API. The new version has better support for IPv6, and handles hexadecimal literals in the IPv6 address. It also includes better support for Gzip and deflate compression, so that communication with a web server can be compressed and thus will require less data to be transferred. Internet Explorer Protected Mode support in WinInet is exclusive to Windows Vista.

On October 8, 2007, Microsoft removed the Windows Genuine Advantage component of IE7 and opened it for all users of Windows.

It was the most widely used web browser during its tenure (surpassing Internet Explorer 5.x), attaining a peak of about 95% usage share during 2002 and 2003 when it began steadily declining until 2007 when it rapidly lost market share to Windows Internet Explorer 7.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 was released on August 27, 2001, shortly after Windows XP was finished. This version included DHTML enhancements, content restricted inline frames, and partial support of CSS level 1, DOM level 1 and SMIL 2.0 The MSXML engine was also updated to version 3.0. Other new features included a new version of the Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK), Media bar, Windows Messenger integration, fault collection, automatic image resizing, P3P, and a new look-and-feel that was in line with the "Luna" visual style of Windows XP, when used in Windows XP. In 2002, the Gopher protocol was disabled and support for it was dropped in Internet Explorer 7. In a May 7, 2003 Microsoft online chat, Brian Countryman, Internet Explorer Program Manager, declared that on Microsoft Windows, Internet Explorer would cease to be distributed separately from the operating system (IE 6 would be the last standalone version); it would, however, be continued as a part of the evolution of the operating system, with updates coming only bundled in operating system upgrades. Thus, Internet Explorer and Windows itself would be kept more in sync. However, after one release in this fashion (6.0 Service Pack 2 in August 2004), Microsoft changed its plan and released Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP SP2 and Windows Server 2003 SP1 in late 2006.

IE5 presided over a large market share increase over Netscape Navigator between 1999 and 2001, and offered many advanced features for its day. Internet Explorer 5 attained over 50% market share by early 2000, taking the lead over other browser versions including IE4 and Netscape. 5.x versions attained over 80% market share by the release of IE6 in August 2001. 5.0x and 5.5 were surpassed by Internet Explorer 6.0, dropping it to the second most popular browser, with market share dropping to 34 percent by mid 2003. In addition, by early 2005 Firefox 1.0 had overtaken it in market share. Version 5.x market share fell below 1% in by the end of 2006. Microsoft spent over a 100 million dollars (USD) a year in the late 1990s, with over 1000 people working on IE by 1999 during the development of IE5.

In August 2001 when Internet Explorer 6.0 was released IE 4.x had dropped to 7% market share and IE5 had increased to 80%. IE 4 market share dropped under 1% by 2004.

The Internet Explorer 4.0 Beta was released in April 1997, and Beta in July that year. Internet Explorer 4.0 was released to the public in September, 1997 and deepened the level of integration between the web browser and the underlying operating system. Installing version 4 on a Windows 95 or Windows NT 4 machine and choosing "Windows Desktop Update" would result in the traditional Windows Explorer being replaced by a version more akin to a web browser interface, as well as the Windows desktop itself being web-enabled via Active Desktop. The integration with Windows, however, was subject to numerous packaging criticisms (see United States v. Microsoft). This option was no longer available with the installers for later versions of Internet Explorer but was not removed from the system if already installed. Internet Explorer 4 introduced support for Group Policy, allowing companies to configure and lock down many aspects of the browser's configuration. Internet Mail and News was replaced with Outlook Express, and Microsoft Chat and an improved NetMeeting were also included. This version also was included with Windows 98. Version 4.5 (only for Mac) dropped support for 68k Macs, but offered new features such as easier 128-bit encryption. The last version for non-mac, was 4.0 Service Pack 2, however. Uninstalling IE4 became the subject of concern to some users and was a point of contention in later lawsuits

Microsoft Internet Explorer 3 (Internet Explorer 3.0) is a graphical web browser released on August 13, 1996 by Microsoft for Microsoft Windows and on January 8, 1997 for Apple Mac OS (see IE for Mac). It kicked off serious competition against Netscape Navigator in the first Browser war. In September 1997 it was superseded by Microsoft Internet Explorer 4. It was the first more widely used version of Internet Explorer, although it did not surpass Netscape or become the browser with the most market share. During its tenure, IE market share went from roughly 3-9% in early 1996 to 20-30% by the end of 1997. Internet Explorer 3 was the first major browser with CSS support. It also introduced support for ActiveX controls, Java applets, inline multimedia, and the Platform for Internet Content Selection (PICS) system for content metadata. Version 3 also came bundled with Internet Mail and News, NetMeeting, and an early version of the Windows Address Book, and was itself included with Windows 95 OSR 2. There were 16-bit and 32-bit versions depending on the OS. IE3 was the first version developed without Spyglass source code, but still used Spyglass technology, so the Spyglass licensing information remained in the program's documentation. Internet Explorer 3.0 was released free of charge in August 1996 by bundling it with Windows 95 OSR2, another OEM release. Microsoft thus made no direct revenues on IE and was liable to pay Spyglass only the minimum quarterly fee. In 1997, Spyglass threatened Microsoft with a contractual audit, in response to which Microsoft settled for $8 million U.S. Version 3 included Internet Mail and News 1.0 and the Windows Address Book. It also brought the browser much closer to the bar that had been set by Netscape, including the support of Netscape's plugins technology (NPAPI), ActiveX, frames, and a reverse-engineered version of JavaScript named JScript. Later, Microsoft NetMeeting and Windows Media Player were integrated into the product and thus helper applications became not as necessary as they once were. Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) were also introduced with version 3 of Internet Explorer. While IE1 and IE2 were said have "paled" in comparison to Netscape, IE3 "delivers a crushing blow to Netscape". The user interface notably changes, with much larger buttons, with more intricate icons, and with a light grey design behind it . Unlike later IE versions, users who upgraded to IE3, could still use the last IE by converting the previous version to separate directory. It also could import favorites into IE3 from IE1 or 2. The competition between Netscape and Microsoft heated up, with some saying the Internet community had "became polarized on the issue of which web browser had the most features" Other new features included Jscript, ActiveMovie multimedia API, HTML Layout Control, Quick Links toolbar, VRML, CSS Microsoft announced on July 29, 1996 that it would develop a native version of IE for "Solaris and other popular variants of UNIX" to be available "by the end of 1996" which would have "equivalent functionality as that provided in Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0", thus "delivering on its commitment to provide full-featured Web browser support on all major operating system platforms" as well as "supporting and promoting open standards, including HTML, ActiveX and Java". In March, 1997 following a dispute which "arose between Microsoft and Bristol concerning each other’s performance of the 1996 IE Agreement" and likely also because of contract negotiations with Bristol to access Windows source code after September 1997 failing,Microsoft reversed course and decided to directly port the Windows version in-house using the MainWin XDE (eXtended Development Environment) application from Mainsoft, the main competitor to Bristol Technology. (Microsoft would later also use MainWin to port Windows Media Player and Outlook Express to Unix.) Now well behind schedule, the 3.0 branch was apparently scrapped in favor of 4.0 (that was released for Windows half a year earlier), which used the new Trident rendering engine. A Internet Explorer 4 Beta for Solaris was released by the end of 1997, leading to Internet Explorer for UNIX versions, which lasted until Internet Explorer 5.

In addition to being sold in the starter kit, Internet Explorer 2 was the first be included in OSR versions of Windows, was bundled with Windows 95 OSR 1. There were 16-bit and 32-bit versions depending on the OS. Version 2.1 came out for Macintosh in August 1996, the same month 2 was superseded by Microsoft Internet Explorer 3 for Windows, which was heavily changed from 1 and 2. It launched with twelve languages including English but this expanded to 24, 20, and 9 for Win 95, Win 3.1 and Mac respectively by April 1996. The 2.0i version supported double-byte character-set. Version 2 lacked many features that became common in later IE versions, including the Blue 'e' logo, shell integration, bundled programs, difficult uninstall, and having significant market share. During its tenure, IE market share only went up to about roughly 3-9% by mid 1996, before IE3 came out.

Windows Internet Explorer (formerly Microsoft Internet Explorer abbreviated MSIE), commonly abbreviated to IE, is a series of graphical web browsers developed by Microsoft and included as part of the Microsoft Windows line of operating systems starting in 1995. It has been the most widely used web browser since 1999, attaining a peak of about 95% usage share during 2002 and 2003 with IE5 and 6 but steadily declining since, despite the introduction of IE7. Microsoft spent over a 100 million dollars (USD) a year in the late 1990s, with over 1000 people working on IE by 1999.

Internet Explorer was first released as part of the add-on package Plus! for Windows 95. Later versions are available as free downloads and are also included in the OEM service releases of Windows 95 and in later versions of Windows. The most recent release is version 7.0, which is available as a free update for Windows XP with Service Pack 2, and Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 or later, and is included with Windows Vista. An embedded OEM version called Internet Explorer for Windows CE (IE CE) is also available for WinCE based platforms and is currently based on IE6. Another Windows CE/ Windows Mobile browser known as Internet Explorer Mobile is from a different code base and should not be confused with desktop versions of the browser.

AMosaic

AMosaic is an Amiga port of the Mosaic web browser. It was the first non-*NIX port of Mosaic, and the first graphical web browser made available for the Amiga. AMosaic was based on NCSA's Mosaic, but was not distributed by the University of Illinois or NCSA. The last version of AMosaic was a 2.0 prerelease.

As is the case for other versions of Mosaic worldwide, AMosaic is no longer updated or supported. It has, however, been ported to the AmigaOS source compatible AROS operating system. The developers of AMosaic went on to develop IBrowse, which is still in active development today.

Cello

Cello was an early web browser and Gopher client for Windows 3.1. It was developed by Thomas R. Bruce of the Legal Information Institute at Cornell Law School, and publicly released on June 8, 1993. The last edition was version 1.01a, released on April 9, 1994.

Cello was created because lawyers used Microsoft Windows on their computers, but web browsers available at the time were mostly for Unix operating systems. This meant many legal experts were unable to access legal information made available in hypertext on the world wide web.

Cyberdog

Cyberdog is an internet suite that was developed by Apple Computer for the Mac OS line of operating systems. It was introduced as a beta in February 1996 and abandoned in March 1997. It worked with later versions of Mac OS 7 as well as the Mac OS 8 and Mac OS 9 operating systems.

Grail

Grail was a free extensible multi-platform web browser written in the Python programming language. Its last release was of version 0.6 in 1999 and has been unmaintained since then.

One of the major distinguishing features of Grail was the ability to run client-side Python code, in much the same way as mainstream browsers run client-side JavaScript code.

MacWeb

MacWeb was an early Mac OS-only web browser for 68k and PowerPC Apple Macintosh computers, developed by TradeWave (formerly EINet) between 1994 and 1996. MacWeb's major attraction was its ability to run well on low-end hardware, with small memory (1 MB or less) and disk (680 kB, small enough to fit on a floppy disk) footprints as well as fast (but simple) page display. TradeWave also developed a similar Microsoft Windows browser named WinWeb. However, they were eclipsed by more full-featured competitors such as Netscape Navigator, and development was eventually abandoned.

The first public release was 0.98-alpha on May 31, 1994, and the final official release was version 2.0 in 1996. An unofficial "2.0c" patch was released by Antoine Hébert in 1998 to correct a problem on old machines not supporting color QuickDraw.

ARACHNE WEB BROWSER

Arachne is a full-screen Internet suite containing a graphical web browser, email client, and dialer. It primarily runs on DOS based operating systems, but includes a few preliminary builds for Linux. Arachne was originally created by Michael Polak (under the label xChaos software, later renamed to Arachne Labs) in the C language and compiled using Borland C++ 3.1 compiler, but since been released under the GPL as Arachne GPL.

ARENA WEB BROWSER

Arena is a web browser developed by the W3C for testing support for HTML 3 and Cascading Style Sheets.

The W3C halted work on the Arena browser, and switched to the Amaya browser as their new testbed. On 17 February 1997, Yggdrasil Computing took over the role of developing the browser. Development seems to have stopped in late 1998, with the final release being on 25 November.

Despite its time of development, Arena is in certain areas a relatively modern browser; because it functioned as a testbed, it saw the implementation of new technologies long before they became mainstream, i.e. CSS.

Safari’s most striking new feature is Web Clip, an OS X 10.5-only addition. Web Clip allows you to select part of a Web page and instantly turn it into a Dashboard widget. For example, let’s say your favorite organization has a news headline section on its homepage. With Web Clip, all you have to do is “clip” the news box from that Web page by clicking the Web Clip button next to Safari’s address field, selecting the relevant section, and clicking on the Add button. Whenever you want to check headlines, all you have to do is switch to Dashboard to see your clipping. This may well be the future of how we interact with the Web.

One common complaint I hear about Safari is that the browser lacks customization beyond basic adjustments such as security, fonts, and which buttons show up in the Toolbar. Unlike Firefox and many other browsers, Safari does not allow users to use third-party add-ons to increase functionality or change the interface appearance, nor does it allow you to specify the default search engine in the toolbar, so you are stuck with Google.

These are fair complaints. Still, browsers that offer more add-ons and customization are also prone to crashing and interface clutter. Safari’s approach seems a fair trade off for simplicity and reliability.

Web browsers communicate with Web servers primarily using HTTP (hypertext transfer protocol) to fetch webpages. HTTP allows Web browsers to submit information to Web servers as well as fetch Web pages from them. The most commonly used HTTP is HTTP/1.1. HTTP/1.1 has its own required standards that Internet Explorer does not fully support, but most other current-generation Web browsers do.

Pages are located by means of a URL (uniform resource locator, RFC 1738 ), which is treated as an address, beginning with http: for HTTP access. Many browsers also support a variety of other URL types and their corresponding protocols, such as gopher: for Gopher (a hierarchical hyperlinking protocol), ftp: for FTP (file transfer protocol), rtsp: for RTSP (real-time streaming protocol), and https: for HTTPS (an SSL encrypted version of HTTP).

The file format for a Web page is usually HTML (hyper-text markup language) and is identified in the HTTP protocol using a MIME content type. Most browsers natively support a variety of formats in addition to HTML, such as the JPEG, PNG and GIF image formats, and can be extended to support more through the use of plugins. The combination of HTTP content type and URL protocol specification allows Web page designers to embed images, animations, video, sound, and streaming media into a Web page, or to make them accessible through the Web page.

Early Web browsers supported only a very simple version of HTML. Modern Web browsers support a combination of standards- and defacto-based HTML and XHTML, which should display in the same way across all browsers. No browser fully supports HTML 4.01, XHTML 1.x or CSS 2.1 yet. Currently many sites are designed using WYSIWYG HTML generation programs such as Macromedia Dreamweaver or Microsoft FrontPage. These often generate non-standard HTML by default, hindering the work of the W3C in developing standards, specifically with XHTML and CSS (cascading style sheets, used for page layout).

Some of the more popular browsers include additional components to support Usenet news, IRC (Internet relay chat), and e-mail. Protocols supported may include NNTP (network news transfer protocol), SMTP (simple mail transfer protocol), IMAP (Internet message access protocol), and POP (post office protocol). These browsers are often referred to as Internet suites or application suites rather than merely Web browsers.

Features and Tricks

Open the Preferences dialog directly using Alt+P. Press F12 to display the Quick preferences menu, which allows you to easily enable or disable pop-ups, cookies, JavaScript, and several other common preferences. The Quick preferences menu also gives access to site preferences.

Using the context menu command Ctrl+M on an open window reveals treasures such as Reload every..., and Validate.

Appendix

Definition: A "key combination" is achieved by depressing and holding down the first key while simultaneously pressing the second one.

Enter is the all-purpose selector key. If you can't get something to do what is described in these instructions, try hitting Enter after making your selection. Tab is usually used for jumping between elements of a program interface. Ctrl is usually used in combination with other keys for shortcuts. Alt is used in much the same manner. Shift is sometimes used as a selector, for example, when checking or deselecting checkbox options or making choices with radio-type buttons.

Ctrl+Z will undo the most recent typing in the URL or any text field or form.

The four "arrow keys" which are situated at the bottom-right of most keyboards, are used for general navigation. The PageUp, and PageDown keys are usually somewhere on the right side of the keyboard as well, and serve to navigate one page at a time. Home will take you either to the top of the document or to the beginning of a line of text. End will take you either to the bottom of the document or to the end of a line of text.

All pop-up dialog boxes can be navigated using Tab, Space, Shift+Tab, arrow keys, and Enter.

Go back

Browsers keep a record of a certain number of pages you have visited. Going back to a previously visited page is therefore easy -- just click on the "Back" button.

Go forward

Going forward is just as easy -- just click on the "Forward" button. Note, however, that going forward is only possible after first having gone back.

Go home

It's easy to get lost on the Internet. But it's even easier to get home. Instead of continuously clicking the "Back" button until you get back to where you started, simply click the "Home" button once. This will take you to the page you have set as your home page.

Reload

Sometimes an interruption occurs and part of a Web page is lost. Reloading the page by clicking the "Reload" button once then becomes necessary. This is also useful for pages that change on a regular basis, like newspaper sites.

Stop

If you would like to stop loading a page, often because the page is heavily loaded with images or you are at the receiving end of a slow connection, simply click the "Stop" button once.

Print

If your system is correctly configured and connected to a printer, simply clicking the "Print" button will print the active document.
